Group Therapy & Consulting Groups

What is group therapy?

Group therapy is a form of psychotherapy where a mental health professional leads a small group (usually no more than 15 people) to help members understand themselves better, improve relationships, develop coping skills by sharing experiences, discussing challenges, and insights in a supportive, confidential setting. Members learn from each other, offer support, and gain self-awareness through shared challenges. Group sessions often focus on specific themes or the interactions within the group itself. Members discuss personal problems and feelings, realizing they are not alone. Members act as a support network, offering ideas, feedback, and accountability, which builds self-worth. There are both Psycheducation groups and Processing groups.

  • Psychoeducation Groups teach skills and provide information on specific topics (e.g., anger management, CBT).

  • Process Groups: Focus on interpersonal dynamics and emotional expression within the group.

What are consultation groups?

A consultation group is a gathering of professionals, typically in counseling or therapy, who meet regularly to discuss cases, share expertise, and provide mutual support to enhance clinical skills and ensure ethical practice. These are often peer-led, groups and  focus on improving patient care, managing difficult cases, and reducing professional burnout. The purpose is to gain new perspectives, overcome clinical obstacles, ensure adherence to specific therapeutic approaches (like DBT or EMDR), and provide emotional support for therapists. These groups are great for new and seasoned therapists in order to feel supported, gain additional knowledge and insight and maintain self care.
